Conventional motor oil starts as crude petroleum, refined to remove impurities and blended with additives. It works, but its molecular structure is inconsistent — some molecules are too large, some too small, and they degrade unevenly under heat and pressure.
Synthetic oil is either fully engineered from chemical compounds (full synthetic) or built from a combination of refined petroleum and synthetic base stocks (synthetic blend). The molecules are uniform in size and structure, which translates directly into better performance across the board.
Full synthetic uses Group IV (PAO) or Group V base oils.
Synthetic blend mixes Group III base stocks with conventional oil.
Conventional uses Group I or Group II base stocks from refining crude.
Turbochargers run extremely hot — turbine housing temperatures regularly exceed 1,000°F under load. When you shut off a turbocharged engine, oil circulation stops but residual heat continues baking whatever oil remains in the turbo bearing housing. Conventional oil cokes (carbonizes) in this situation. Synthetic oil's superior thermal stability resists coking, protecting bearings that can cost $1,500–$3,000 to replace. Virtually every turbocharged engine produced after 2010 specifies full synthetic by the manufacturer.
In temperatures below 0°F, conventional oil thickens to a consistency that delays full lubrication for 30–60 seconds after startup — the period when 70% of engine wear occurs. A quality full synthetic like Mobil 1 0W-40 or Pennzoil Platinum 0W-20 flows immediately at -40°F, putting oil film on bearings within seconds of cranking.
If you push your engine hard — sustained highway driving, towing, autocross, or track days — synthetic is non-negotiable. The viscosity index of full synthetic remains far more stable under shear stress than conventional oil, meaning the oil film between metal surfaces stays thicker where it counts.
Many automakers now specify 10,000–15,000-mile oil change intervals for vehicles running full synthetic. Toyota, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz all use oil life monitoring systems calibrated for synthetic oil. Running conventional oil on one of those extended schedules accelerates sludge buildup and can void powertrain warranties.
Conventional oil is not obsolete. There are genuine scenarios where it remains the practical choice:
A persistent myth holds that switching from conventional to synthetic on a high-mileage engine will "loosen deposits" and cause leaks. This is largely unfounded. Switching to synthetic does not damage seals or suddenly dislodge harmful deposits in a well-maintained engine. However, if an engine has significant sludge buildup from years of neglected oil changes, synthetic's superior detergency can begin dissolving that sludge — which may then clog oil passages. The solution is an engine flush or multiple short-interval changes, not avoiding synthetic permanently.
Your owner's manual specifies the API service category (currently API SP for gasoline engines) and the viscosity grade (e.g., 5W-30, 0W-20). If the manual says "full synthetic required," you have no debate to resolve. If it says "API SN or newer," you can use conventional, synthetic blend, or full synthetic — all three meet the spec, and full synthetic exceeds it.
Brands worth considering across both categories include Mobil 1, Pennzoil Platinum, Castrol Edge, Valvoline Advanced, and Royal Purple on the synthetic side; Castrol GTX, Quaker State, and Valvoline Daily Protection on the conventional side.
Full synthetic costs roughly 2–3x more per quart than conventional, but it lasts 2–3x longer between changes. When you factor in labor and filter costs, the total annual spend is comparable for most drivers — and synthetic delivers meaningfully better protection during that period. For turbocharged, high-output, or extreme-climate applications, the protection gap justifies the premium without any further calculation.
Yes. Mixing synthetic and conventional oil of the same viscosity grade will not damage your engine. The mixture simply performs at a level between the two — closer to conventional than full synthetic. Top off with whatever is available in an emergency, then complete a full oil change at your next scheduled interval using the oil type your manufacturer specifies.
No, synthetic oil does not cause new leaks in engines with healthy seals. If switching to synthetic triggers a leak, the seal was already compromised and near failure. Synthetic's lower viscosity at temperature can allow oil to seep through gaps that thicker, worn conventional oil temporarily masked. A high-mileage synthetic blend or conventional oil formulated with seal conditioners is a reasonable choice for engines over 150,000 miles with older seals.
Change full synthetic oil at least once every 12 months regardless of mileage. Oil degrades through oxidation and contamination over time, not just miles. If your vehicle has an oil life monitoring system, follow it — those systems account for both time and operating conditions. Without a monitor, the 12-month rule applies even if you drove only 3,000 miles.
It's a genuine engineering requirement, not marketing. Turbocharger bearing temperatures demand oil that resists thermal breakdown at sustained high temperatures. Every major turbocharged engine manufacturer — including Ford EcoBoost, GM's turbocharged four-cylinder family, BMW's B-series engines, and Subaru's FA/FB turbocharged variants — explicitly specifies full synthetic in their owner's manuals, and warranty claims related to turbocharger failure are evaluated against that spec.
Use exactly the viscosity grade printed in your owner's manual. Automakers specify viscosity based on bearing clearances machined into your specific engine. Using a thicker oil than specified (e.g., 5W-30 in an engine designed for 0W-20) restricts flow through tight clearances in modern engines and increases fuel consumption. Using thinner oil in an engine designed for 5W-30 reduces oil film thickness at high temperatures. Match the spec — the manufacturer's engineers tested it extensively.
